Rivals (in English | англійською)

The wind sang a song a hundred voices strong,

But enraptured silenced its fervors

Stopped beside you and languorously

Sighed into those tresses of yours.

And the stars and meadow eavesdropped,

And rivers and bridges overheard,

As the wind whispered to you softly:

"I’ve never seen the likes of yours.

Do you want the clouds driven away from you?

Do you want me to drown the earth in rain?

Just give me a glimmer of hope,

Only faintly whisper – the same…”

And although you said nothing,

Because you didn’t heed the wind’s words,

He, forgetting the sweet stillness,

Scattered- the clouds dispersed.

And as the sun looked down from the sky

Through its deep azure light,

The sun falling in love with you,

Shone all the more bright.

II

The wind chases clouds in the sky

And composes songs about you,

The sun became sleepless -

And suddenly days grew.

And both suited you

To hear spoken times countless:

"We’ve fallen hopelessly in love,

Smile just once at us..."

III

So harken, sun and wind!

Quit your wailing for a moment!

I have something to say, I’ll make it simple,

If you’ll listen and be silent.

I wish you would tell me

Without lies, without sobs, and howls:

How many times have you already loved

With your endless hours?

How many have you tousled their hair,

How many more yet will you stir?

You loved all of them together not as much,

As one should love her!

I will not dispel the clouds for her

And I will not flood the earth with rains,

And I cannot boast like you,

But my love more deeply remains.

What you threw like a necklace,

At millions of beauties’ feet,

I held in my heart pristinely pure

Kept for only one- her.
